How it works
The code contains the number and message in the form SMSTO:+15551234567:Your message.
Phones recognise it and open the messaging app with everything filled in — no need to remember a
short code or type a keyword.
Popular uses
- Sign-ups: “Text JOIN to subscribe” without anyone mistyping the keyword.
- Bookings and callbacks: “I’d like an appointment” on posters and cards.
- Contests and voting: one code per option at events.
- Service requests: a code on equipment that texts the maintenance team.
Tips
- Keep the message under 160 characters so it fits in one SMS.
- Tell people what they will receive back, for example “We’ll reply within 1 hour”.
- If your audience mainly uses WhatsApp, try the WhatsApp QR code instead.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text message sent automatically?
No. Scanning opens the messaging app with the number and text filled in. The person reviews it and taps send.
Does it cost anything?
Creating the code is free. The person who sends the message pays their normal SMS rate, which is usually included in mobile plans. International numbers may cost more.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both open the default messaging app. The code uses the widely supported SMSTO format.
What number format should I use?
Use the international format with a plus and country code, for example +1 555 123 4567. That way it works for people scanning from any country.
